About

Chip's Challenge is a top-down tile-based puzzle game originally developed by Chuck Sommerville and published by Epyx for the Atari Lynx in 1989, then ported to MS-DOS and popularised on Windows via the Microsoft Entertainment Pack. Play as Chip McCallister as you navigate 144 hand-crafted maze levels packed with logic puzzles, teleporters, traps, keys, locked doors, fire, water, ice, and a menagerie of monsters. Collect all the computer chips on each level to unlock the exit and advance — but watch your step timer! The game became a cult classic and inspired an entire subgenre of tile-based puzzle games still active today.

How to Play

Collect every computer chip scattered through the level to unlock the exit gate, then reach the exit before the timer runs out. Avoid monsters, fire, and water — grab boots to walk safely on ice and over fire. Keys open colour-matched doors. Toggle buttons flip walls on and off. Work methodically: the levels are complex and the order you tackle them often matters.

ControlsArrow keys — move Chip one tile at a time. Right Alt + Enter — fullscreen (DOSBox). Esc — pause / menu.
